Chinese New Year in Red Lantern at Solaire
Over the years Manila’s Chinese cuisine has evolved beyond the confines of Binondo with hotels and international restaurant brands enveloping the Metro with options for all occasions. Solaire Resort & Casino offers diners the Red Lantern, a classy modern restaurant that screams red. From the red illuminated waterfall entrance to the bright red carpet flooring, it’s clearly a Chinese restaurant. I had the pleasure of being invited by Zomato.com to sample Red Lantern’s best-sellers and chef highlights. I was welcomed with a bottomless hot tea that’s never less than full and my choice of tea based mock-tail.

Yu Sheng “Prosperity Toss”
Traditions make celebrations special, the tossing of salad symbolises good fortune for the year ahead. An intimate activity with relatives, close friends, and in my case with my blogger family; Eatsplorations.com , Splat Manila , AlwaysHungry.ph , and of course The Lost Diego aka Ong.
Garden Bay – Braised Mushroom Bao
I bow to the design of this intricate dish, presented in a bowl with a soil-like appearance topped by a carrot made from glutinous rice and minced pork, and the detailed bao designed to look like a mushroom. A wow factor for guests in looks and taste.
Har Gau with Black Truffle
Shrimp Hakaw with truffle and a brush of gold.
Whole Roast Duck (4,888 PHP)
Duck! It’s good! Roasted to a nice golden finish, this heft U.S. Duck was chosen for it’s meaty and fatty attributes, allowing for a better ratio of duck vs bone.
Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk
This dish won the night, praises and satisfaction couldn’t have been more heard especially when you’re seated beside Chef Alvin Ong who gets over-excited on delicious food.
A visually intriguing dish, shaped like a pyramid to showcase the layers of neatly sliced pork belly, a modern presentation for the classic Dong Po. I’m not an expert on the Chinese cuisine or any cuisine for that matter, I’m simply an eater. This dish may not be authentic in taste, but is tasty enough to be part of your meal.
