Merchant’s Lane is located on the southern entrance of Jalan Petaling street the popular road of Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur City.

Merchant’s Lane made it to our must visit list when we saw a photo of their rustic ambiance and its convenient location along our planned route to the Petaling Street Market. We made this our breakfast spot for our 3rd day in Kuala Lumpur.

The nondescript entrance might be difficult to find, but you won’t miss the vibrant cyan doors that hide the stairway leading to the 2nd floor where the cafe welcomes you with even more colours contrasting against the dark woods and distressed wall that gives the place its character.

The great thing about Kuala Lumpur is that GRAB CAR rides are affordable and available at most times. Our average rides cost only 5 MYR / 60 PHP / 1.25 USD within a 1.5 Kilometer radius of the KL Tower (The landmark near our hotel).

They offer comfort food dishes such as this savoury beef stew that can’t be had without rice, a side order of pandan rice made it even better.

Hongkie Beef Stew (22 MYR / 25 PHP / 5 USD)

Green Tea Matcha Frappe (13 MYR / 150 PHP / 3 USD)

We went all-out with our green obsession and ordered their green tea matcha frappe, which was just alright, but to be fair this is an off-menu item.

Merchant’s Lane is a locals gem hidden along the outskirts of the touristy Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur. If you’re in the area we highly recommend a visit, but to go out of your way would be up to your schedule and with KL having such a high standard for food it’s hard to find anything but good. If you’re looking for a visually unique experience Merchant’s Lane couldn’t be higher on our list.
